Elegance and minimalistic are two words that best describe the iconic suit style- The Pinstripe. When we think pinstripe, we think 1920 gangsters and bankers in Oxford shoes, trench coats and a sleek hat to finish. This fine fashion piece did have an earlier appearance in the early 19th century with bankers and sportsmen.

Amidst its controversial origin, it is agreed that stylish Brits, who wanted to project an image of sophistication and class through their choice of suit, originally made the pinstripe famous. The modern pinstripe has crossed the gender divide and has become a basic component of women’s clothing, particularly in business, where it remains especially popular with both genders.

The pinstripe suit is the perfect wild card, as it can adapt to any occasion with close attention to styling. The ease of the print and style makes for easy styling, whether for a corporate event or something more casual. As it has become a favourite of both men and women, the pinstripe has over the years been reinvented to include skirts, shorts, tapered pants and wide-leg pants, all with a shoulder-padded blazer.

Thinking of trying this out? Here are a few tips to remember:

  1. The pinstripe is an effortlessly chic outfit that can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.
  2. Pair a pinstripe blazer with a dress or office pants either for a formal or casual occasion. It could be worn or draped with the right accessories to match.
  3. Though pinstripes are all about stripes, don’t be afraid to try them out in bold colours, lengths and styles.
  4. Wearing a three-piece pinstripe without an inner shirt on a pair of sneakers is a fine way to have all pieces out for a casual event.
