Accessorising is definitely the highlight of every outfit, and the right jewellery would take each clothing piece from one to ten.

Granted, great jewellery pieces sometimes come with a price tag, but that shouldn’t turn you off from buying some jewellery now and then.

So how do you care for your jewellery to ensure their longevity and that they remain pin peak condition? Here are some carefully thought out tips to care for your jewellery:

The right way to care for your jewellery is to ensure it is properly stored. Avoid leaving your jewellery on chemically treated surfaces or wood, as they can stain your jewellery, speeding off its tarnishing process.

A helpful tip is to always store your jewellery in a case or box and keep each piece separate to avoid them scratching against each other.

  • Know What You’re Working With

Cleaning your jewellery is highly recommended; however, you need to know what materials your jewellery is made out of before you begin cleaning. Cleaning the wrong jewellery can cause wear and tear, eventually damaging the piece in the long run.

It’s also important to consider asides the material, the intended patina and blooming (dipping a piece in acid to allow it to appear like real gold).

To keep your jewellery clean, be sure to wipe it at the end of the day with an anti-tarnish cloth to remove moisture, dust and oils before storing.

Take it off first.

Perfume, hair spray and lotion may potentially tarnish your jewellery. Also, you can cut your necklace or lose an earring while taking off an outfit. So follow this rule of care by putting jewellery on last and taking them off first.

  • Keep Them Away From Sunlight

When storing your jewellery, avoid placing them where they could come in direct contact with sunlight, as the sun’s UV rays could damage the colour of your jewellery. Remember to also keep them away from other sources of heat.

  • Put Your Pieces on Rotation

Jewellery is meant to be worn, but not 24/7. So, to ensure that your pieces last longer, try rotating them, swapping out one piece for the other regularly.

Finally, avoid sleeping with your jewellery on; sleeping in jewellery can cause harm not just to the piece but also to you.
