In a stunning revelation, TikToker Aboki (handle: @Sewerbum) has broken down the reality and true details about Italian leather. Growing up, “Italian leather” was synonymous with high quality, a sentiment many Millennials and Gen Zs might have missed out on.
Now, that notion has faded, and the New York-based Hausa TikToker explains why. The truth is, much of what was called Italian leather was actually sourced from Nigeria. Nigerian herdsmen in the north provided and refined the impeccable leather, which was then bought by Italian companies and high-end fashion brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Gucci, who falsely labeled it as Italian leather.
After a series of court cases initiated by disgruntled Nigerians who weren’t credited, including Aboki’s own sister, an injunction was placed on labeling the leather as Italian. Consequently, the leather was rebranded as “Genuine Leather,” still refusing to acknowledge its Nigerian origin.
Aboki’s first TikTok video exposing this reality went viral, sparking a sales surge for Winston Leather, a Nigerian company that actually produced many of the bags for these high-end European fashion brands. Follow Him Here and watch the follow up.
