This October, African Fashion Month is back with a jam-packed schedule. From traditional runway action, informative workshops and seminars, emerging designer showcases, and after parties, there’s enough to almost make up for the pandemic years of barely going out. What are we looking out for here at Industrie Africa? Some of our very own designers are sure to make waves, while a few other fashion heavy-hitters are also on the schedule. A few new comers are sure to catch our attention, too, and we’re particularly pleased to see a host of sustainable designers in the mix. HUB OF AFRICA ADDIS FASHION WEEK

Founded in 2010 by Linda Murithi and Mahlet Teklemariam, Hub of Africa Fashion Week was established with the purpose of highlighting the growing pool of high caliber African designers and brands, making them visible to an international market. Set to take place at the Hyatt Regency in Addis Ababa, this year’s event—which marks it’s 10th edition—will feature installations, panel discussions, workshops, and a pop-up marketplace, as well as runway shows by designers from across the continent including Tanzania’s Doreen Mashika, South Africa’s MaXhosa, Togo’s Victoria Grace, Ethiopia’s Mafi Mafi, Senegal’s Sarayaa, and Kenya’s Deepa Dosaja. This season’s panel discussion is between FA254 (Fashion Africa 254) and the 6 designers they’ve mentored for over a year, all of whom will be sharing the experience of the mentorship with startup designers looking for career guidance. SOUTH AFRICAN FASHION WEEK

Launched in 1997, South African Fashion Week is one of the biggest fashion events on the African continent and showcases some of the most established as well as some of the most promising emerging design talents from South Africa. This year marks 41 seasons since its inception. With numerous designer development initiatives, South African Fashion Week has become known for discovering and nurturing talent, not only when it comes to the design skills needed to succeed in the industry, but also teaching the business skills necessary for the growth of young labels. As such, this season’s lineup is a confluence of the local industry’s heavyweights alongside younger and emerging brands. The likes of Amanda Laird Cherry, Black Coffee, MaXhosa, Loxion Kulca, Michael Ludwig Studio, The Bam Collective, Erre, Fikile Sokhulu, and more will be presenting brand new collections at Johannesburg’s Mall of Africa—the home of SAFW. GLITZ AFRICA FASHION WEEK

Over the years Glitz Africa Fashion Week has built a reputation for fostering both local and West African talents from neighboring countries like Nigeria, as well as a mix of Ghana’s new, emerging, and established labels. This year’s programme will include an exciting lineup of activities for fashion industry players: designers, creatives, entrepreneurs, influencers and enthusiasts alike will descend upon the Grand Arena, International Conference Center in Accra for four days of all things fashion. A seminar for beauty brands, influencers, and entrepreneurs will also be held at the event, as well as a business seminar which caters to the growing fashion community, fashion students, and emerging designers. Lagos Fashion Week

One of the biggest fashion events on the African continent, this season’s edition of Lagos Fashion will be held towards the end of October. Committed to the future of fashion and telling culturally rich stories centered on African creativity and craftsmanship, LFW will, as per usual, consist of a range of workshops, retail activations, and runway shows featuring designers including Gozel Green, Orange Culture, and Cynthia Abila. A showcase of the finalists of the Green Access sustainability accelerator programme is also on the programme. An initiative that nurtures young designers and drives a commitment to sustainable design principles and the transformation of their business models to reflect these, this season’s finalists include Nigeria’s Adaora Soludo, Nneji Akunne, Lu Adesola, Peter Oshobor, and Peter Acha, South Africa’s Themba Paulos Shezi and Sipho Lushaba, Ghana’s Kwaku Kyere, Kenya’s Akoth Otieno, and Morocco’s Essrhir Scheherazade.
