Before you start reading this article, there is a need to clear up a misconception about singlets and boxers being part of the activewear family. They are not. So, if you are someone, who thinks you look good while exercising in a singlet and boxers, sorry to burst your bubble.

With the increasing number of people diving into the fitness space, activewear is gaining more recognition than ever. In addition to being worn for athletic purposes, it’s slowly finding its way into other genres such as, Street style and high-end fashion.

To lose weight or gain muscles that would make heads turn, you need the right activewear. And by ‘right’, what it simply means is activewear that will make you feel both comfortable and confident. In a bid to guide you the next time you are browsing through what activewear to buy, here are five factors to consider.

Fit
The extent to which you feel comfortable while lifting dumbbells or running is dependent on how fit is the activewear. Be it a sports bra or leggings, your clothes should feel like an extension of your body. However, that doesn’t mean it should be too tight. Look for activewear that is suited for your body type and draws a fine line between tight and loose.

Protection
When the word ‘workout’ is mentioned, people immediately think of the gym. While weight lifting beds are a good way to burn calories, cardio exercises such as running or walking are also effective mediums.

To steer clear of UV radiation from the sun during outdoor exercises, opt for activewear made with fabrics that offer UV protection.

Colour
Sweating and exercising are like five and six. So, if you are the type of person who feels uncomfortable with sweat stains showing on your outfit, then be very selective of the colours of sports bras or tank tops you wear.

Rather than buy a pink or body suit that is bound to point out the sweaty parts of your body, darker or neutral colours would do the trick.

Functionality

Functional in the context that your activewear should be able to serve other purposes. For example; if you carry small items like a phone, credit card or car keys everywhere you go, there is no dispute that you should go for clothes with pockets.

Fabric type

Exercise can be intense, which is why you need to wear athletic apparel made from the right fabric. You should opt for breathable fabric products. Not only do they keep you cool, but they are also nice on the skin.
