After nearly three years of intense debate and deliberation, Ghana’s Parliament has made a significant decision regarding the highly contentious Anti-LGBTQ+ bill. Introduced years ago, the bill has sparked widespread discussion and controversy throughout the nation.

In a historic session held on Wednesday, February 28, Parliament unanimously approved the bill following the completion of its third reading. Despite proposed amendments during the session, Speaker Alban Bagbin rejected them, solidifying the bill’s form before its passage.

With the bill’s approval by Parliament, it is now set to be forwarded to President Akufo-Addo for his assent. This pivotal moment in Ghanaian legislation follows the withdrawal of several proposed amendments by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin just days prior to the final vote.

During Wednesday’s parliamentary session, Afenyo-Markin reiterated his stance on the bill, emphasizing his opposition to certain provisions. He particularly highlighted concerns regarding potential restrictions on individuals or groups offering support to vulnerable members of society, stressing the importance of aligning the bill with constitutional imperatives.

However, not all members of Parliament shared Afenyo-Markin’s perspective. Bernard Ahiafor, representing the National Democratic Congress, opposed the Majority Leader’s proposed amendments, arguing against measures that would prohibit funding, promoting, and facilitating LGBTQ activities.

On the other hand, Kobina Tahir (K.T) Hammond of the New Patriotic Party underscored the need for careful consideration to ensure alignment with constitutional principles. He noted the Majority Leader’s efforts to amend the bill and questioned opposition to further proposed amendments.

Despite the impassioned debate, Speaker Alban Bagbin proposed deferring further consideration of the bill, citing parliamentary provisions. However, unexpected drama ensued during the session, as a motion to suspend rules and move to the Third Reading was carried, overriding objections from the Majority Leader.
