A sensational moment took place yesterday when Tyla received a well-deserved award for her viral international pop song ‘Water,’ released as the lead single from her debut studio album ‘Tyla’ on 28 July 2023 through Fax and Epic Records. The chart-breaking track was composed by Ghanaian producer Sammy Sosa.

The incident occurred at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, which honored recordings, compositions, and artists from October 1, 2022, to September 15, 2023, as chosen by the members of The Recording Academy, on February 4, 2024.

However, it seems her innocent victory as a musician has fueled the Nigerian/South African internet banter that has been playing out online for quite some time. This even prompted Afrobeats Music manager, Adesope Shopsydoo, to call for the cancellation of the Grammys by Africans. He laments that Grammy Award organizers are clueless when it comes to Afrobeats.

He further claims that the Grammys don’t understand our culture, and they don’t care about us, as seen above. “No Nigerian won a Grammy, but a South African won. This is Nigerians being generous so that when we win them in AFCON, they will have something to banter with,” another user wrote on X.

Nigerian singer Billy O told the BBC he was disappointed Nigerian singers did not win the award, saying this showed a lack of real appreciation for Afrobeats and Afro RnB by the voters.

“Despite dominating in Africa, I think we are not really well appreciated when it comes to the Grammys,” he said.

However, Tyla’s award didn’t just boil the blood of Adesope; it has also been perfectly aligned as fuel for the fire of the upcoming Nigeria vs. South Africa football match taking place tomorrow, where South Africa’s Bafana Bafana will go head-to-head with Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Stade Bouaké in Bouaké, Ivory Coast. The game is scheduled for a 17:00 local time kick-off, which is 17:00 GMT and 18:00 CET. The winner will then go on to face either Ivory Coast or DR Congo in the 2023 AFCON final on Sunday, 11 February.
