### Gulf States Grapple with Severe Flooding as Unusual Rainstorm Hits Region

A powerful rainstorm has swept across several Gulf states, triggering flash floods and disrupting operations at the world’s busiest international airport. Dubai Airport confirmed that operations were “temporarily diverted” due to the adverse weather conditions, but have since resumed normal services. In an alarming update, authorities in Oman reported at least 18 fatalities resulting from the floods, with some still missing.

The extreme weather event saw several states receiving nearly a year’s worth of rainfall within a single day. Unverified footage from Dubai International Airport circulated online, showing jets navigating flooded runways, creating waves in their wake. The airport released a statement explaining that inbound flights scheduled for Tuesday evening had been diverted due to the “exceptional weather event” in the UAE. However, departures continued to operate, and flight services resumed after a two-hour interruption.

The Gulf region, typically known for its hot and dry climate, has been experiencing increased instances of heavy rains and flooding in recent years. This unusual weather pattern has scientists pointing towards climate change as a significant factor. They warn that as the planet continues to warm, exceptional storms like this one will become more frequent. For every 1°C rise in average temperature, the atmosphere can hold about 7% more moisture, leading to more frequent and intense rainfall events.
