Kenyan company Pine Kazi is gaining attention for its innovative approach to sustainability by transforming discarded pineapple leaves into eco-friendly textiles. Pineapple farmer James Kinuthia, once disposing of or burning pineapple leaves, now sells them to Pine Kazi at 15 Kenyan shillings each, creating an additional revenue stream for farmers.
The company employs workers to sort and extract fibers from the leaves, which are then processed into sustainable textiles through drying, spinning, and weaving. Pine Kazi’s initiative addresses both economic and environmental concerns, contributing to reduced carbon and methane emissions from discarded pineapple waste.
CEO Olivia Awuor emphasized their commitment to eco-friendly fashion products, like shoes and bags, positioning Pine Kazi as a pioneering force for sustainability in Kenya.
