Ciara Imani May, the visionary driving Rebundle, is on a mission to revolutionize the hair extension industry while putting the well-being of Black women and the environment at the forefront.

After experiencing scalp irritation and rashes herself while using synthetic hair, Ciara (@_Cizn) decided it was time for a change. She launched Rebundle.co, drawing inspiration from her personal challenges and aiming to provide a safer option.

“The concept originated from my own struggles with hair extensions, which resulted in scalp irritation and rashes,” May shared with The Root.

Toxicity has no place, and this applies to hair extensions as well. In contrast to synthetic hair, Rebundle’s plant-based hair bundles are entirely devoid of harmful plastic toxins.

May places significant emphasis on the brand’s dedication to creating hair extensions that closely mimic natural hair, all the while adhering to the fundamental principle of non-toxicity. “Our focus remains on ongoing research and development to make our bundles as hair-like as possible, while steadfastly upholding values such as non-toxicity,” May explained.

Nevertheless, Rebundle’s impact surpasses personal health considerations. May acknowledges that transitioning to plant-based hair extensions might represent a substantial shift for certain individuals. To address this, she has instituted a hair recycling program for wearers who still have an attachment to their synthetic hair. This initiative not only fosters accountability for existing waste in the ecosystem but also provides an avenue for individuals to contribute to environmental sustainability, even if they are not yet prepared to fully embrace plant-based hair. May conveyed, “Our intention is to promote accountability for the waste that already exists in the ecosystem. Furthermore, this program allows our community to opt for sustainability, even if they are not ready to switch to plant-based hair. It empowers them to make a positive environmental impact.”

May’s vision goes beyond merely offering safer and more sustainable hair extensions. She envisions a complete overhaul of the entire process of acquiring and disposing of extensions, while simultaneously ensuring inclusivity and transparency. “Our commitment is resolute in making a substantial impact on the health and environmental footprint of hair extensions. Moreover, we seek to revolutionize the purchasing and disposal experience of extensions and involve a broader spectrum of stakeholders,” May shared.
