Moscow Fashion Week Embraces Designers From Around The African Continent

Moscow Fashion Week, a vibrant showcase of the talented emerging designers who are making their mark on the world stage, recently presented an array of global designs in Russia’s sprawling metropolis, highlighting the country’s growing influence on global fashion. This affair, which spanned from March 1st to 8th, drew attention not just for its venue—Europe’s largest city—but for acting as a global platform that represented a wide selection of established and emerging fashion talents from dozens of countries.

At the heart of this weeklong celebration was the expressive diversity of African fashion. Ethiopian designer Mastewal Alemu, along with South Africa’s Boys of Soweto and DOPE Store, brought to the runway collections penetrated with narratives and social consciousness. Alemu’s commitment to ethical fashion, the Boys of Soweto’s fusion of past and futuristic influences to address societal themes, and DOPE Store’s vibrant assimilation of street culture with design emphasized the richness diversity brings to global fashion.

The event’s grand finale unfolded at the “Russia” exhibition at VDNH, where graduates from Moscow’s leading fashion schools displayed their collections, invigorating the runway with innovation and a sharp reflection on Russian cultural identity. Sergei Sysoev, a notable designer and head of the costume design department at the Russian Kosygina University, extolled the graduates for their creativity and emphasis on Russia’s heritage. The finale was further enlivened by a performance from Otyken, a group celebrated for their modern musical compositions inspired by the cultures of Northern and Siberian smaller nations, and who have also earned a Grammy nomination.

Moreover, Moscow Fashion Week placed a significant emphasis on inclusivity and social issues, integrating models with Down syndrome (courtesy of KUZINA) and spotlighting collections like FIGHTELEMENT that raised awareness for vitiligo, underscoring a commitment to embracing diversity and challenging exclusivity on the runway.

Beyond the fashion shows, Moscow Fashion Week emerged as a hotspot for networking within the international fashion sector, facilitated by the presence of celebrities, influencers, and a strategically curated marketplace and showroom. Highlighted among the attendees were Italian film star Ornella Muti and her daughter, Naike Rivelli, whose participation underscored the event’s embrace of models across a wider age spectrum. Additionally, Chinese actress Lily Ji captivated audiences with her wear of ancestral Chinese costumes, manifesting a bridge between heritage and contemporary fashion.
